Magic
The power of influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces. It is said to come from many sources. Some say it is a gift from the deities who limit it to mortals for their own safety, others say that magic has always existed ever since the birth of the land. Whatever the roots, magic is a force that has been used in all cultures, with both good and evil intentions. There are laws concerning magic, universal rules that are unwritten but understood by all who use it.
- Magic is everywhere. In every being, in every object, flows the trickle of magic.
- Magic is limitless. It comes in all forms and transcends the normal bounds and limitations of reality. There is always new magic being discovered. There is no refinement of magic, and it comes in all types, shapes and kinds.
- Magic is dangerous. Those who wield it must learn this lesson or suffer the consequences. It has the power to be destructive in all manner and must be controlled by the user at all costs.
- Magic is unstable. It is not a being who thinks and listens. It is a tool as unstable as fire. It must be contained or it will consume all. Magic does not listen to one user or a single command, but to many things and beings at once.
- Magic is not usable by all. Not all beings possess the ability to sense magic or knowledge to use it. Though it flows through all living creatures, only those whose minds have opened can tap into it's power.
Uses of Magic
Black Magic: The use of magic where it is performed and used for harmful purposes. Black magic is seen as taboo in many places, with many fearing it's potential. It is the most destructive, known to kill, sabotage and generally affect in a negative manner. Those who use black magic are said to bring bad luck upon themselves, as wielding it for bad purposes throws the laws of the world out of balance.
White Magic: Magic which is performed for good intentions or purposes. It is used to aid, help and improve in astounding ways, benefiting not just the user but those around them. White magic is still unstable but it is likely to be more accepted and tolerated. Those who use white magic gain good favour and are said to get more blessings in their life.
Grey Magic: Being able to use magic for the purpose of only the caster's will. Grey magic is seen as a hybrid of black and white magic where the user determines what to use at the appropriate time. Grey magic is questionable and many are suspicious of those who use it, them having the potential to be unpredictable. It is used for both negative and positive effects and is described as the centre of the moral compass where the caster decides what path to choose.
The Schools of Magic
Elemental Magic
The most primal form of magic. It is based primarily on the four natural elements in the mortal world. These elements are known as fire, wind, water and earth. The elements were founded on the basis of natural disasters that affected the mortal world and it's civilisations. Without these disasters occurring, the true appreciation for the elements would have never came into the light and the pursuit of magic in these fields would never exist. Those who use Elemental magic will usually focus upon a single element, though true masters are known to conquer all four. Masters of the four elements are called Elementalists.
Arcane Magic
The fundamentalist idea behind arcane magic is that a fifth element exists, not in nature, but in the people that inhabit it. Arcane magic is exhumed by the mind of an intelligent being and the power of will alone. Anyone who deals with the arcane is said to be intellectually gifted. Unintelligent beings have been unable to fathom it's unpredictable and mysterious ways. Arcane magic has been both the reason for the rise and fall of empires in Verenthian history, the most well known being the arcane elves.
Arcane magic relates to the mind, powered by ego and thought. It has been used to practice or encourage psychic ability, using the mind to induce paranormal phenomena. A firm link between the consciousness and the higher consciousness is required to access the more advanced abilities of arcane magic.
The Dark Arts
Named so for it's nature. It is feared and respected by many, but is rarely welcomed. Those whom are found to use the dark arts are captured and punished, for most of their uses are unorthodox and seen as too dangerous to wield. The Dark Arts is banned in many places, specifically the human kingdoms controlled by the Imperials.
The Dark Arts is the name used to label varying classes of magic. Those whom use the dark arts can be easily corrupted, becoming targets to creatures and forces deemed most foul. The roots of dark magic are said to have been passed down from demons whom had been using it since the dawn of time.
Alteration
Alteration is one of the most simple yet complex schools of magic, most commonly found used in professions and workplaces. Alteration is the art of manipulating the physical matter of things and changing the world in some form or another. Enchanting and enhancing are used to improve armour, weapons or other materials items.
Alteration has also been known to be used on the body, allowing advanced magic users to turn themselves into wild beasts or monsters. It is declared to be the most vague of magic types for being able to expand over many different and complex areas that other magic does not affect.
Divine Magic
Magic performed under the blessings of a deity. The deity is called upon to transfer their power into the body of the mortal through various means, such as rituals, sacrifices, prayer or through circumstances. Usually the power is leant through performing a feat for the deity in mind, and each deity offers different feats through different reasoning.
